June 15th, 2012: I went to the cystic fibrosis clinic today for a routine check up. I was pretty excited. This was my first visit since starting the website. I figured this would be a great way for me to start tracking my Spirometry or pulmonary lung function scores, specifically my FEV1. Normally, I tend to hang around the mid-seventies (“normal starts around the 80′s).Image Detail

I showed up and got my vitals done, good blood pressure and a slight weight gain 152.8 (of all muscle I’m sure). It was good to see the weight gain. I’ve been around 145 lbs since I started really hitting the gym. I changed up my workout and added more protein. It worked too, I put on 5+ lbs and raised my bench press max by 25 lbs.

After my vitals, I went to get a ct scan of my sinuses. While my lungs are typically in good shade considering, my sinuses always suck. I also suffered from a wicked, put me on my ass, migraine about a month ago. CT done and I go to the ENT next week.

I got back to my room and was told “Adam, you’re next to blow”. I’m 33 years old now and slightly more mature than a 15-year-old, but it still makes me feel a little uncomfortable. None the less here we go. I went back to the room to “blow” and things were a little different. Normally, I pick up the mouthpiece and get ready to go. This time, I entered what essentially looked like a phone booth with a chair in it. They ran all kids of tests and I only got as a high as a 68 for my FEV1. I understand many people would love that, but for me it would be a big decline and is unacceptable. I went back to my room like nothing bothered me.

My doc said, “are these numbers right? It seems everyone’s numbers are down” (on the new machine). I took my opportunity and spoke up. “I’ll do it again (on the “normal” machine) to find out”. I went back a second time, grabbed my mouthpiece and blew like the big bad wolf blowing down a house made of straw. 76! Now, my spirits were back up. Blew again. The piggies just didn’t learn, this time their house of sticks was done. 78! Now that’s what I’m used to and strive to continue. Felt much better.

All in all, my lungs sounded great, my lung function tests were normal, maybe a little above (showed off my theCfNinja.com shirt a little), walked out with my mind preparing for next weeks 5k!
